2014 resolutions : checking in

Happy Friday!!

Also, happy last day of January! Thank baby Jesus, am I right? January is probably my least favorite month of the year. I really made an attempt to like it at the beginning, but by the middle of the month I was just about done. I will not be sad to see it go.  A couple days before the New Year I shared my goals/resolutions/ whatever on Instagram . I figured, since it is the last day of January, I would go back over my list and see how I am doing so far! Tryin’ to keep myself accountable and all that good stuff!

Processed with VSCOcam with b5 preset – be more organized : well, I’d say that I am doing pretty well with this so far. I bought/have been using a planner, so that basically means i’m the most organized person on the planet, right? I’ve also made an effort to keep my room clean, and I even cleaned off my desk so I have an area to do my schoolwork in next week. Yep, patting myself on the back for this one.

– read 1 book a month // 100 movies in 2014 : done! I actually read two – Are All My Friends Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling and The Boook Thief by Markus Zusak. Hopefully I can keep this up despite starting school next week. Usually school = reading for pleasure goes out the window. I’m doing great on the movies front as well, i’ve been keeping a list and I have  already watched 13 movies!

– write a bucket list : nope. not yet. completely forgot about it actually, until I look at that picture again. Maybe i’ll make this my goal for february? we will see.

– cook real meals more : check! Killin’ it  in this category as well. I’ve discovered that I feel great satisfaction after eating a meal i’ve actually made an effort to prepare. Dare I say that cooking is kind of fun? Sometimes. Other times I’m completely satisfied with cereal for dinner.

– hug more, smile more, laugh more : I’ve kind of been in a funk for a large chunk of the month. I’m blaming it mainly on anxiety & the fact i haven’t seen the sun in forever. I seriously think I have SAD. Gotta work on this in February.

– less social media, more articles & blogs : while I am still fairly addicted to social media, I’ve discovered so many new blogs as of late that I loooove, and I’m basically reading everything  I can get my hands on. Combined with blogging so much, I’ve been feeling super inspired lately!

– don’t be so afraid – less worry, more risks : hahaha nope. worry central over here. work in progress.

– work on balance, not perfection : I feel like this is starting to work itself out. Slowing starting to let go of my perfectionist tendencies. Easier said than done.

– take more photos & write more :  Done! I’ve been on a major writing kick lately, which is unheard of for me, so I’m going with it. As I mentioned, I went out yesterday a took a bunch of photos.

– more adventures, more exploring : Yep! While winter makes this fairly difficult, any time there is even a hint of sunshine, I’ve found someway to be outside. I cannot wait for hiking weather!

– less negative self talk : ehhhh, up until this week, this wasn’t going so well. This week has been a pretty good week, but old habits are hard to break. Especially one that has been a habit for so many years!

– be present : kind of? There have been moments when i’ve consciously stepped back for a moment and really soaked in what was happening at that moment. And other times? Days have passed in complete blurs.

Going through these, and thinking hard about the past month, and writing everything down has made me realize i’m doing much better than I thought I did. Obviously, I still have a lot of work to do, but I made these goals for a year, and I didn’t really expect to accomplish everything within one month. I think I might do a monthly check in like this, just to keep myself on the right track.

** I apologize if there are any spelling errors/things that don’t make sense. I wrote this late last night and didn’t have the time today to edit it! 🙂

Have a beautiful weekend, everyone!

  1. I am currently listening to the Mindy Kaling audiobook. I find humor books (ellen, tina fey, chelsea handler) so much funnier with them reading it. I almost died of laughter when she said she had little brown rivers appear on her arms that she really liked until her mom told her they were stretch marks. Hilarious! I too, am hoping to take more pictures. However, it is just far too cold, and with this big storm headed my way it just doesnt seem like a good idea!

    • I never even thought about getting the audiobooks! I definitely have to do that, especially since I already laugh so hard just reading them myself. I’ve been meaning to try out a Chelsea Handler book, but haven’t gotten around to it yet! Stay warm, and have a great weekend!! 🙂

      • I never thought of them either until I somehow stubbled on Ellens (youtube I think?).. there is an app called “audible” it is partnered with Amazon I believe. I found a bunch of different links (you will have to make different accounts if you want to use it more than once) but these links will give you 1 free download/book. “audible.com/gigi” “audible.com/blair” “audible.com/connor” .. I have no idea who those people are but they give you free downloads!

  2. The Book Thief is SO good. And the movie is actually really good too! I love that your goal is to see more movies as well. I am a HUGE movie person. I actually have a website that let’s you watch movies before they’re out on DVD. I’m just super impatient haha. (It’s illegal but everyone does it) such a good excuse hahaha.
My goal to hug more, smile more, and laugh more, would be for the summer. I’m kind of a Grinch in the winter. I just really hate it and my attitude is just not as good. It’s -8 here -23 with the wind-chill. Which is actually a step up compared to the -40 we’ve been having. Still, we got dumped with 3 inches of snow last night so that didn’t help anything.
This year, I forwent the whole resolution list. Basically because I never stuck to them. If I just make tiny goals for myself each month it goes a lot better.
Keep going!! I am always full of good book recommendations! If you have a Goodreads account you can snoop on mine. I have a bit of an obsession with reading. I got 56 read last year.

    • Ohh, I have never heard of Goodreads before, I should check that out. 56 books, that’s insane! I wish I read that much, I love reading, but I also love television so that usually wins haha Don’t worry, I don’t wait until movies come out on DVD either hahaha. I agree, it’s super hard to be cheerful in the winter, but i’m doing my best! have a good weekend girl!

      • It’s a wonderful app and website! I live on it. You mark books you’ve read and you can rate them and stuff and you can mark books as “want to read’ and then based on those books it’ll give you recommendations to other books. I’ve found so many good books I wouldn’t have otherwise with it.
You have a good weekend, also. Mine will probably be spent reading and watching movies 😛

  3. I couldn’t get through The Book Thief, but I think I’m going to give it another try because I have heard nothing but amazing things about it. Loved the Mindy Kaling book though!

I like the idea of revisiting your resolutions at the end of each month.. it’s a great way to hold yourself accountable for the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Otherwise, it’s so easy to forget about them.. a monthly check-in reminds you of your goals.

  4. Looks like someone is rocking their goals, girl! Seriously, take a minute and really look at everything you accomplished in one month, and then give yourself a serious pat on the back. You are a rock star!

    • Awhh this made me smile so big!! Thanks girl! It’s funny how as January went by day to day, it didn’t seem like I made many changes, but you’re right, when I look at it as a whole, it was a pretty good month 🙂

  5. i’m just going to adopt your goals since we are twins separated at birth and they are basically the same as my goals. especially balance over perfection. i’ve been trying to embrace that one more. come spring time i am coming to canada… i am stating it as fact now. it is happening! 🙂
